European Mast Cell and
Basophil Research Network

In memory of Marcus Maurer

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear colleague Professor Marcus Maurer. In late July, while on vacation, Marcus embarked on a hike and went missing for several weeks. He was found dead near Lago Maggiore on September 7th. The scientific community of clinicians and scientists working in the field of mast cell-driven diseases is in profound shock. His passing leaves us with a tremendous void.

Marcus was a founding member of the European Mast Cell and Basophil Network (EMBRN), contributing actively for more than 15 years. He first served as Corporate sponsor liaison officer, then as President, and most recently as past President, a position he held until 2024. He was the main applicant and chair of the COST action “Mast Cells and Basophils – Targets for Innovative Therapies”, a pivotal initiative for EMBRN during the first year of its establishment.

Marcus was an inspiring visionary for all of us. He had the ability to combine experimental and clinical research, making his work truly translational. He fostered collaborations and served as a mentor to many, both young and more experienced researchers and physicians. His enthusiasm and “never give up”-spirit pushed the field forward in many ways.

Our thoughts are with his family to whom we offer or deepest condolences. Marcus will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on, continuing to inspire all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
